2022 Theme: Families and Urbanization

Today, urbanization is one of the most important megatrends shaping the global order as well as the life and well-being of families at the micro-level. As we all celebrate International Day of Families on May 15, 2022, this year’s theme, "Families and Urbanization", aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable, family-friendly urban policies, in the process of creating a greener tomorrow for all.

The Coronavirus Disease Pandemic and Its Impact on Families

The COVID-19 pandemic started as a health crisis, and eventually had unprecedented effects on the families worldwide. It affected all spheres of life, including our economies, education, and nutrition. It negatively impacted care arrangements, work-family balance, gender equality, and other aspects of family life. But just like every dark cloud has a silver lining, this tough phase left families with an experience - of fighting together, and for each other, of spending lots of time together, of loving, caring and sharing, and of standing up to protect each other!

Could Families Help in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals?

Family policies are a mainstay of national public policies and the most meaningful vehicle for present governments to organize and influence the living standards of upcoming generations. As part of achieving the global ambitions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), family policies play an integral part in meeting targets across many of the goals. Therefore, we must understand that each family can and must play a significant role at the micro level to protect the environment, and to save Mother Earth.

By teaching our children starting at a young age to care about the environment and by promoting the best habits for the preservation of our ecosystems, we can and should always build lifelong habits. Doing this can make a dramatic difference in the future of our earth. Our kids can play a huge role in improving and protecting it through innovative and continuous volunteer projects, that will also boost their overall confidence and provide them with endless opportunities to grow, to flourish, to learn, to spread happiness and create a beautiful tomorrow..
